Background of the Study

Neonatal resuscitation is a critical skill for nurses involved in childbirth and neonatal care. Training programs, such as the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), are designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage neonatal emergencies effectively. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes an evidence-based approach to newborn care through such programs.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of neonatal resuscitation training, variations in nurses' competency levels persist, potentially affecting neonatal outcomes. At State Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, the specific impact of NRP training on nurses' competency has not been thoroughly evaluated, limiting the ability to implement targeted improvements.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of neonatal resuscitation competency among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of NRP training in enhancing nurses' skills and knowledge.
  3. To identify factors influencing the successful application of neonatal resuscitation techniques.
  4. To recommend strategies to improve NRP training and competency among nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current competency level of nurses in neonatal resuscitation at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi?
  2. How effective is the NRP training in improving nurses' neonatal resuscitation skills?
  3. What factors affect the application of neonatal resuscitation techniques by nurses?
  4. How can NRP training programs be enhanced to improve nurse competency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. NRP training significantly improves nurses' competency in neonatal resuscitation at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.
  2. Factors such as ongoing practice and institutional support influence the effective application of neonatal resuscitation techniques.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, who have undergone NRP training. It evaluates their competency levels and identifies factors affecting the application of resuscitation techniques. Limitations may include potential biases in self-assessment and the study's restriction to a single hospital, which may limit the applicability of the findings to other settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal Resuscitation: Emergency procedures performed to support newborns who are not breathing or have compromised cardiovascular function at birth.
  • Competency: The combination of skills, knowledge, and abilities that enable an individual to perform tasks effectively.
